Tides

In my environmental science class,
we often discuss the impact of disposable waste: how
fast-fashion, paper cups, and plastic bags,
dispersed across the earth from landfills to beaches,
end up out of sight and out of mind.
It is a habit of convenience,
of curating a new wardrobe every season,
of a hot coffee on the way to work,
of grabbing take-out food during a lunch break,
all to be thrown away before considering
the consequences of what's at hand.
Where does it go?
Letting go
from the hand that feeds is a thousand times easier
than it is to take responsibility
of honest mistakes,
of past regrets,
of hating ourselves and others.
It becomes a habit: one that inconveniences,
yet one that we guard with our lives to keep hidden from prying eyes.
And yet, I find it everywhere, like
a tidal wave weathering the coastline
that comes, and goes, and cycles indefinitely
until the end of time -- an indisposable fact
at the forefront of my mind.
